I Wish....

I wish this had been an April Fools day joke but it wasn't. On Friday, April 1st Kiley got her first set of stitches.

She was playing in my parent's kitchen where she got tangled up in her blankie while running around the table and fell into the back of a kitchen chair. I watched the whole thing happen and I knew it definitely hurt her but I didn't realize how bad it was. Her mouth was bleeding and the cut above her eyebrow looked bad but wasn't really bleeding.

My mom and I were able to get the bleeding in her mouth to stop but we weren't sure what to do with the cut above her eye. There was blood but it wasn't oozing, gushing, or otherwise doing anything. My dad who is a stitches pro, having had so many stitches himself, looked at it and told us we needed to go to the hospital.

We met Dave at the hospital where we were able to immediately see a doctor. They had to clean out her cut and place some topical numbing cream to help with the pain and eventual stitching. Kiley was so brave as the nurse cleaned it out and put the gauze on her forehead. While we waited for the medicine to kick in Kiley ran around playing with toys in the room and the halls. She even got a Buzz Lightyear sticker from one of the nurses.

The doctor then came in to get down to business. Gauze pad off, sterilize the cut, and straight jacket the baby until she can't move. How do you tell your one year old she needs to hold still so the doctor can stitch up her face?! It was awful.

The nurse had her head while Dave and I held her little body. Just like in the Dentist office they had a light in her eyes so she couldn't see. All she could do was cry over and over Mama Dada Mama Dada. Dave and I were in tears as the doctor stitched up the cut with 5 stitches.

Kiley really was so brave during the whole thing and as soon as we got her in the car she fell right asleep. She woke up later for some dinner and then went right back to bed. The next morning she was her happy cheerful self and she hasn't touched her stitches once.

Dave and I always thought we would never have a baby who would need stitches this soon but I guess you should never say those kind of things out loud. I am grateful that it happened the night it did because we found a great Pediatrician for the future and the timing of everything couldn't have been more perfect.

For many of you who may be worried of some gruesome disfigurement on our babies face. Apparently sunscreen applied everyday for the next year will leave no sign of a scar what-so-ever.

Oh! So sad! Poor little girl, and poor parents! I haven't dared say anything out loud, but I'm actually surprised we haven't had any incidents like that with Tucker yet--even though he's constantly banging his head on something. Glad she's okay!

Definitely use that sunscreen! When Hayden had her skin graph on her finger, I didn't know that the sunscreen would help and the scar is now permanently "tanned." Wish I would have known that then!
